Remora Class Escort- A Shape Study

No, I’m not changing lanes again, but the brain’s gotta do what the brain’s gotta do.  All of my recent studies into ship schematics for the Abbe Class (and others) got me wondering about some of my favorite non-canon designs.  So, I thought I would do a quick little study into the possible shapes for FASA’s  Remora Class Escort.  I’ve used the standardized parts (saucer & nacelles) I produced for the Abbe Class and other ships, and they should fill in here nicely until they need to be customized for some of the Remora’s more unique elements.  The saucer will require the most alteration as the design features a large wedge cut out of its aft section.  The secondary structures (lower hull “fins,” “tail,” and nacelle pylon) are all low-poly  stand-ins for future structures.

Like several of FASA’s designs for Star Trek: The Role-Playing Game, the schematic profiles for the Remora class are essentially irreconcilable with one another.  The port, dorsal, and forward orthographic projections just don’t seem to line up.  Taken from the RPG supplement Federation Ship Recognition Manual, the Remora has always pleased me… out of the corner of my eye.   One of those “cock -your-head-and-squint” designs of merit,  it nevertheless has its flaws.  Never mind that I hate starships with single nacelle configurations; Many fans consider the ship weak based on her specs and the fact that she only has the one nacelle.  I never played the game, so I wouldn’t know a FWE from and FWJ warp engine to save my life.  Despite the fact that I still remember those particular designations, specs are just “blah blah” to me.  Still, the one engine flaw is a no-brainer, as I have always intended to put two nacelles onto this design if ever I chose to build it.  Granted, they will need to be mounted closely together to retain the overall feel of the ship’s design, but in my mind, engine pairing is non-negotiable.

The wide “fin” structures and long tail could have almost qualified the ship for “Manta Class,” but since the ship is an escort, Remora is a more than appropriate designation.  This lower section has always been the most problematic however, as they just have so many possible “interpretations” due to the inherent flaws in the original drawings.  The dorsal and port profiles appear to match at first glance, but fail to line up smoothly when examined in detail.  As for the forward angle view, I have never been able to figure out what I am seeing in that drawing.  Is it a full out secondary hull with decks and internal space or just enlarged panels serving the ship’s overall function?  Neither those 3 game profiles or the specs provide answers to this.  And to further confuse the issue,  a couple of years later there was another  FASA recognized design put out in supplement known as the Charger.  It is virtually identical save for a few minor aesthetic details and specs.  I’ve seen several competent fan versions, both as 2D drawings and video game models that re-think this lower section into full-out, under-slung, secondary hulls.   Though certainly interesting, I’ve always thought they were a bit bulky and strayed from the Starfleet standard I love so much.  Since the ship is designated an escort, I’ve always thought it might make sense to make the large panels some type of extensive shield delivery system that allows it to take the brunt of an attack for the lesser defended craft in its care.  Placing a few decks along the upper portions of the fins where they meet the saucer and reserving the large tail section for true secondary hull purposes could resolve this issue.

The secondary structures  are all stand-ins.

I used the original FASA schematics for this model.  It is the hardest to make out in detail, but allows for the most artistic license.  I started out doing some quick and dirty paper cutouts that allowed me to get some ideas for the actual shape of the secondary hull fins.  This little origami exercise provided some inspiring shapes.

Once in Lightwave I did one version of the lower hull that favors the lines of the port profile, while this version picture below (which I prefer) tends to let the dorsal view speak the loudest.  As evidenced from the schematics above, the forward profile’s secondary hull is a mishmash of shapes that seem to have no coherent connection to the other 2 profiles.  As such, I’ve completely ignored this angle in Lightwave to avoid further confusion.

Looking down on the dorsal view, I’ve always thought that the secondary section closest to the saucer section should be perfectly parallel with the horizontal orientation of the saucer.  Of course when you implement this, the port profile is thrown totally out of sync.

I’ve always thought the large triangular shapes on the fin structures were some kind of shield grid that helped the ship in its defensive capabilities.  this is why I’ve colored them darker than the rest of the hull to differentiate them.
